Washing-duvets, How to get the best wash on your quilted bedding

washing-duvets page,

How to launder your continental quilt or duvet to the highest standard without damage to this expensive piece of bedding.

Google

washing-duvets,

This page will cover all things relevant to the washing and drying of continental quilts, duvets, feather bedding and any down filled product, this could also include many of the down filled garments such as ski wear and cold weather gear.

The biggest problem when laundering this range of products, is finding a washing machine large enough to get them in with enough space left over to provide a suitable mechanical action for the level of soiling on the products.

Most down filled and hollow fibre filled products require a minimum drum ratio of 20 litres of drum volume to one kilo of product being washed. See my laundry calculations page and how to do laundry for more information at .... washing-duvets, laundry calculations shw you the size of laundry machine required .......washing-duvets,In many cases such as high tog, king-size, winter duvets and sleeping bags just getting them through the door and into the machine is a challenge.

For example a king size 13 tog hollow fibre duvet will require a minimum of a 14 kg machine or 140/150 litre drum size, with a large door to enable the duvet to be placed inside the machine.

Drying should be in a 350 litre or larger tumble dryer with reverse action drums to enable the item to tumble without getting tangled.

To get the feathers/down/ fibres to "fluff-up" within the pockets they have to be well dried with plenty of air blowing though them to get the item back to its original bulk and insularity.

Where water proof membranes in garments and sleeping bags are in use, the drying process will need even longer to fluff up the filling to fill the pockets.

This is where a counter rotating tumble dryer drum is essential as any trapped water pockets get emptied, to allow faster drying.

If you will notice lumps of filling stuck into the corners of the pockets within the duvet or jacket, there are still wet fibres within the pockets. Which means it will have to be placed back in the dryer again until the down/feather/hollow fibre is dry enough to fill the pocket.

You may have to shake and move the lump if it is too large and stubborn to dry. But it will dry and fill the area when dry, but it may take a little longer than normal bedding and clothing.

Washing a large duvet or quilt at home there is only one way "the Bath"

Yes if you are not willing to pay for the local laundry to wash your duvets or quilts, the only other way of washing-duvets is to fill a bath with hot soapy water and get on in there with your feet and "tread the grapes" method of washing like our mothers/grandmothers used to do with the old wash tub or copper boiler.

Leave to soak for a couple of hours first then create the mechanical action by any method of pounding using hands or feet then allow to drain.

Fill the bath several times with fresh water to rinse then leave to drain for a couple more hours; I hope you don't need the bath at the same time; then lift carefully into a large wash basket lined with polythene to save the drips in the house on the journey to the washing line.

Once it has been on the line for some time you may be able to get it into the tumble dryer to give it a bit of a blow.

In some cases if the duvet is a low tog you may be able to get the duvet into the washing machine if it is pre-soaked, which makes it easier to handle through the porthole of the washing machine, in which case you could run it through a thorough wash cycle.
