Washing-duvets, page under construction
washing-duvets page,
How to launder your continental quilt or duvet to the highest standard without damage to this expensive piece of bedding.
washing-duvets,
This page will cover all things relavent to the washing and drying of continental quilts, duvets, feather bedding and any down filled product, this could also include many of the down filled garments such as ski wear and cold weather gear.
The biggest problem when laundering this range of products, is finding a washing machine large enough to get them in with enough space left over to provide a suitable mechanical action for the level of soiling on the products.
Most down filled and hollow fibre filled products require a minimum drum ratio of 20 litres of drum volume to one kilo of product being washed. See my laundry calculations page and how to do laundry for more information at ....

washing-duvets,
In many cases such as high tog, king-size, winter duvets and sleeping bags just getting them through the door and into the machine is a challenge.
For example a king size 13 tog hollow fibre duvet will require a mimimum of a 14 kg machine or 140/150 litre drum size, with a large door to enable the duvet to be placed inside the machine.
Drying should be in a 350 litre or larger tumble dryer with reverse action drums to enable the item to tumble without getting tangled.
To get the feathers/down/ fibres to "fluff-up" within the pockets they have to be well dried with plenty of air blowing though them to get the item back to its original bulk and insularity.
Where water proof membranes in garments and sleeping bags are in use, the drying process will need even longer to fluff up the filling to fill the pockets.
This is where a counter rotating tumble dryer drum is essential as any trapped water pockets get emptied, to allow faster drying.
If you will notice lumps of filling stuck into the corners of the pockets within the duvet or jacket, there are still wet fibres within the pockets. Which means it will have to be placed back in the dryer again untill the down/feather/hollow fibre is dry enough to fill the pocket.
You may have to shake and move the lump if it is too large and stubborn to dry. But it will dry and fill the area when dry, but it may take a little longer than normal bedding and clothing.
