washing-crockery, some additional information on washing crocks
Crockery is usually marked on the bottom as "dishwasher safe"
When washing-crockery, you will find that plastic items such as, Fridge storage boxes, made from thermoplastic, lunch boxes and ice cream containers will melt at high temperatures; but may survive in water around 50ºC in a dishwasher. But you may find the heated drying cycle may be a problem as the dry heat may cause the plastic to melt and run down onto the heating elements and cause a fire. Thermosetting plastics although usually able to withstand higher temperatures should only be washed at 50ºC Always check with the crockery manufacturer for the suitability of over-glazed items, as usually these would be damaged both by the water mechanical action and the high level of alkaline detergents used within a dishwasher; especially a commercial dishwasher with a powerful alkaline commercial detergent. Polished Aluminium items such as tea pots and sugar bowls will loose their shine, and maybe discolour with the mineral impurities in the water, this appears as a gold or copper coloured coating on the item, which spoils the shine for ever. If silverware is washed at the same time as stainless steel items, a contact electrolytic action can result in the corrosion of the stainless steel. This is particularly prevalent with silver handled cutlery with stainless steel knife blades. Pitting will be seen on the tip of the knives. For more information on calcium in the water supply go to my hard-water page at...
Hardwater the solution to limescale build-up in your dishwasher.
Hard water is a help in some washing-crockery processes as the soil molecules are attracted to the calcium particles and are removed during and with the rinse water; this can be seen in the difference in finish where tea stains are involved; such as tea/coffee shop with large amounts of tanning deposits on the inside of the cups. It is best if you have this problem, to discuss it with your detergent supplier as she may be able to provide a detergent right for your type of water. It is a paradox about hard-water and soft-water in washing processes, soft water is super for the wash cycle and hard works well at the rinse cycle, but this is rarely possible, so compromises have to be made with the type of detergent chosen.
