– A Heavy soiling wash process is required due to the nature of the work, large amounts of soot, mud, sweat, oil and greases, as well as the possibility of body fluids and blood. – Controlled Drying requirements for these garments mean that they are first processed in a tumble dryer to bake off the water proofing and flame retardents then the thicknesses have to be air dried by hanging in a drying room for maybe 24 hours to complete curing the process.

– This means that garment can be out of circulation for several days during the laundry turn round. All add to the cost of keeping firemen and women ready to respond to the call,fire-service-uniforms

The Dupont® /Nomex® Omega® system for fire-service-uniforms

• Z-200TM aramide (maroon) & reflective tapes, as it says is the reflective tapes on the garment for recognising who is who during an incident, these must not lose any of their reflective properties during the washing and drying process.

• Thermal lining - aramide/Nomex fibre, this is the insulating barrier between the outside of the garment and the wearers body.

• Moisture control - PTFE film laminates + Nomex & Gore-Tex® cloths, these inter liners are required to stop the operative being boiled alive by the hot water getting inside the garment. As mentioned above.

These produce pockets of water during the spin and drying processes, which means reverse action drums and pauses to allow the water to drain away during the wash, spin and tumble drying is necessary.

• Physical protection - Polymer coated Kevlar® reinforced knees elbows etc.

These are the hard wearing parts of the garment which take the maximum abrasion during use, and are subject to wear from brick dust, grit etc.

• Requires precision control of all wash/dry and proofing parameters.

This is achieved with the use of programmable washer-extractors and tumble dryers with precise dosing pumps for the range of chemicals which are introduced during the wash and proofing section of the cycle.

• Special control of proofing process using fluorocarbon based resins to render the fabric - oil - dirt - chemical and water repellent.

• Owing to the nature of the materials used in the construction of multi-layered garments and fire-service-uniforms, it is also necessary that after cure/drying/proofing process, garments are fully dried off using drying cabinets or drying rooms.

Which means a garment is out of service for several days, so a range of replacement garments is required to give a full 365 day service to the public.
