Washing-Glassware, how to get the best quality wash with your precious glassware every time.

Washing-Glassware how to do it
There are three types of glassware in common use and they are:-
Borosilicate
These glassware products are of high stength, with high chemical resistance, as used in the oven ware such as Pyrex and tough tumblers of the moulded type found in the supermarkets.
Also used in the laboratory industry, test tubes, funnels, flasks etc.
Highly resistant to scratching and wear and tear. Can be washed at the highest temperatures and even in an autoclave for sterilisation, with maximum mechanical action.
Soda Lime Glassware
These are the soft drinking glasses found in every day use, they will be subject to etching and wear and tear during the wash process which can be seen with lines around the centre of the glass, and an opaque haze on the glass after several years of use in the dishwasher.
When Washing-Glassware you take a choice break them by washing them in a bowl by hand, or wear them out over a longer period by washing them in a dishwasher.
Lead Crystal
Lead Crystal glassware, is the one type of glass we get asked about most as to whether or not it is a good idea to wash them in your dishwasher.
The answer here in Washing-Glassware is that if they are very expensive brandy balloons with diamond cut crystal and they are used every day you will break one or two in use, and when you wash and dry them by hand in warm soapy water and carefully rinse and dry them with a soft glass cloth, you will break one or two over time it is inevitable.
Or you can place them carefully in the dishwasher where they will be washed and dried without breakages but over the months and years they will be subject to etching.
I feel the latter is the best especially when dealing with long delicate stems which can easily be broken in the process of handling them in soapy water and drying cloths.
You may wish to take the extra precaution of washing your lead crystal on its own in the dishwasher on a low temperature program with reduced detergent down to the minimum, even an economy wash if your machine has one. Have a look at
The Miele web site.
In a former life I used to work for Miele on the professional machines so I know they have the best solution to any Washing-Glassware challenges you may have.
These machines are also used in Kosher kitchens, where every thing has to be kept separate, check out my dishwasher page by following the link to

You may also like to check out the Disinfection control page to see what that entails at

Disinfection is normally taken care of in dishwasher in the rinse program, whilst disinfection in laundry is normally done in the main wash part of the program.
Although most organisms and pathogins are killed during the wash in a dishwasher at 60 degrees Celcius with the aid of some pretty strong chemicals which are based around strong caustic surfactants see the
