Wash-Care-Labels-a-Quick-Guide
This Wash-Care-Labels-a-Quick-Guide page gives a quick guide to what the wash care labels or symbols mean, for a more detailed explanation of why, what & how, refer to the main page at
Laundry Symbols and labels main page.
This Quick-Guide page is aimed to cut to the main details of the label, to give you the quick answer as to which program to use, or whether or not to use bleach, tumble dryer, hot iron or high temperature or maybe even dry clean.
These pictures show what you should see when you check the wash care label.
The Circle the guide to dry cleaning, on your wash care label or symbol.
The Circle symbol is a guide for the dry cleaner, it gives the type of fluid to be used, or if it has a large P with as cross X through it it means do not dry clean. A circle with a P in it will almost certainly need to be dry cleaned and should be washed only where the other symbols on the garment label give a guidance to the wash as well. You will frequently see the large letter P which means use perchlorethylene which is the most popular dry cleaning fluid in use today. See main page for exactly what all the letters mean. Also if there is a line drawn underneath the circle it means a deep wash tub of liquid is advised to reduce mechanical action see main page for reasons (normally delicate wool or silk items). The Iron symbol or guide to the temperature of the rotary iron or callender
Wash-Care-Labels-a Quick-Guide for the Iron symbol gives you the temperature of the iron in 1 dot * Low temperature delicates or silk 2 two dots ** medium temperature wool and coloured cottons, or 3 three dots *** High Temperature for white cottons and linen, or finally with a Cross X means Do Not Iron. If there is a cross through the iron symbol this means do not iron this garment. Always err on the low temperature side unless creases are stubborn. Better to iron garment slightly damp. Always use de-ionized or distilled water in your Steam iron, otherwise
Hard water will cause a build up of lime scale,
and therefore hard water will damage the iron with lime scale, which will block the steam jets with hard lime-scale deposits. This can be cured by filling the reservoir with a strong solution of vinegar and leave it switched off for a few hours to de-scale the inside of the steam channels. A steam Iron is designed to produce the steam and the heat together, so, if you leave out the water there could be damage to your garments. Try never to use a steam iron without water in the reservoir as the damage to your iron and possibly the fabrics you are trying to finish may be catastrophic. Wash Bath Symbol or label for temperature & mechanical action or water depth.
The depth of the bath or dip level inside the wash drum, and the temperature of the wash is contained in the bath sign or a cross X, which would mean do not wash in washing machine. For more information than a Wash-Care-Labels-a-Quick-Guide go to the main page, which will give you the why's and wherefore's of temperature and depth of water in the wash tub. As you will remember from the sinners diagram (in How to do Laundry) if you increase the height of the water level in the wash drum, you reduce the Mechanical Action, Dilute the Detergent solution, and will normally reduce the final temperature of the of the main wash, thereby making it an altogether less vigorous wash program. Check out how to control Lime Scale build up @

The Tumble dryer sign looks like a washing machine with a X through it for do not tumble dry
The tumble dryer sign can be seen below in a typical wash care label. Always follow the directions on your tumble dryer for the amount of heat required. If it looks like a little drawing of a tumble dryer with a cross through it, this means do not tumble dry. This is for a woollen and delicate fabrics such as viscose garments, a Wash-Care-Labels-a-Quick-Guide brings you all the insider information on laundry and dish-washing. Never leave damp clothing in a tumble dryer without an anti-crease or safety program which turns the washing over every couple of minutes or so after the cycle has finished. Tumble dryers are subject to spontaneous combustion if hot damp clothing is left over night or for long periods with no movement. Just like the fires that occur in damp hay and straw down on the farm, so never leave damp washing in your machine unless it has an anti-crease programme, which will keep the washing turning over every minute or so. This will also protect your machine from spontaneous combustion, as well as keep the creases at bay.
The triangle or chloride bleach symbol normally with a X cross in it.
The bleach symbol or triangle lets you know whether it is safe to use a chloride bleach in the wash, this is normally introduced in the penultimate rinse, the one before the last and final rinse. Or when hand washing during a pre-soaking to remove disastrous stains or to disinfect foul laundry prior to washing in the normal way. Great care should be taken when handling bleach, as it can cause very dangerous gases if spilled on to some soap powders, never mix chemicals unless you are qualified to do so. Check out COHSE regulations by following the link on the bleach symbol picture. Follow link to HSE for guide-lines by clicking on the illustration of the symbol.
