Laundry-spin-g-Force, how to judge the quality of your spin drying cycle and what it means.

These figures will guide you when choosing the right machine for the task. Always study the small print in the technical description pages of the brochure to compare one machine against another, until you find the right one for the job in hand.

When it comes to comparing one washing machine with another, especially when looking at commercial machines, the gravitational force applied when removing the water during the spin cycle is very important, as it means more water can be removed mechanically before placing the clothes in the tumble dryer. This is a good thing.

To work out just what the g-Force of your machine use the following formulae

g = 0.56 x D (n/1000)²

where D = the Diametre of the wash drum in mm

and n = to the RPM for the spin cycle

Therefore a machine with a drum size of 800mm with a spin speed of 1000 rpm the G-Force is calculated as;-

g = 0.56 x 800 x ( 1000/1000)² = 448

So in the hand book the G factor would be given as approx 450g

So you could easily do a quick check on the Laundry-spin-g-Force of machines from different manufacturers by doing a quick calculation of the drum diametre and the spin speed.

So don't be fooled by the spin speed alone when ...... Choosing a laundry machine because the diametre of the drum and speed of the spin are both important factors to give the maximum extraction rate for the washing machine.

These figures are of great importance when you are washing a lot of 100% cotton towelling or bed linen, this is where the drying and finsishing costs are a substantial part of the final equation when building a new OPL or "On Premise Laundry". The faster and cheaper method used to extract moisture from the clothing will save maony in the long term.

Another important point about the spin speed of your washing machine is, is it quiet or does it sound like a lightning jet- fighter taking off with full throttle after-burners in verticle scramble/intercept take-off mode? If this is the case look elsewhere for your new machine.

Some years ago I had a prospective buyer from an hotel in Herefordshire, (Martin Griffiths from Penros Court Hotel in Kington) visiting our showroom in Abingdon Oxfordshire.

He was very impressed with all we could show him, but was reluctant to make the buying decision. "I would like to see a large machine in operation first before I buy" he said.

So choosing the right machine for the job is paramount. Decide in haste and repent at leasure. Buy cheap and buy often, buy quality and enjoy many years satisfaction that you took your time and made the right decision.
