Laundry Equipment For Nursing Homes and Large establishments

How-to-start-a-Laundry

For larger nursing homes a multiple of Sluice/Disinfecting washing machines of 7/10/14 kilogram load, or larger machines should be installed, to give the optimum capacity, and flexibility, for the most economic use of the space, and labour available.

It is never a good idea to have one machine where two will do the job, with more long term protection against breakdown because nursing homes are inoperation 365 days a year you would not want all your washing capability tied up in one machine.

When working out the number of machines required allow 25Kg per incontinent resident and 8Kg per ambulatory resident per week,

then divide the total laundry by the number of hours of work per week to arrive at a figure per hour.

How-to-start-a-Laundry insider tips and knowledge for your benefit, contact me if your have questions or comments.

Always check Access in How-to-start-a-Laundry it's no use having chosen machines which will not go through the entrance to your laundry building.

How-to-start-a-Laundry all the insider knowledge and tips from the horses mouth!

All washer extractors are high speed spin, with a suspended drum, with springs and shock absorbers, which eliminates the need for heavy reinforced concrete plinths and hydro-extractors.

Machines are still on sale with slow spin rigid mounts with no shock absorbers, avoid these if you can as the extra work involved in drying the washing is a big minus.

PLINTHS do you need them? Yes in most cases.

Where gravity drain machines are in use, (all sluice machines are gravity drain via a dump valve) an adequate fall to the rear, to allow a fast discharge of the waste water.

This will normally require a plinth, also for ergonomic reasons it is better to have the machine on a plinth, to raise the height of the door to reduce the amount of bending, and subsequent strain on the back of laundry person. Take a look at the .........

Miele Professional UK site Where you can source machines from 5 kilogram up to 30kilogram in both washer-extractors and tumble dryers.

Care patients have become more frail and incontinent within the private care sector during the last twenty years

It has been my experience during the last 29 odd years, that the client ratio in nursing homes, has moved towards a larger number or percentage of incontinent resident, due to the care in the community policy, which means most nursing home laundries are working at full capacity.

So it is imperative that the right choice of machine is made at the outset, with enough room to increase capacity should the need arise in the future.

Calculating the size of an Hotel Laundry and all the issues arising

A rule of thumb, for the calculation of the size and number of washing, drying and ironing machines, required for an Hotel On Premise Laundry (an OPL)is;

that between 3.5 and 4.5Kg of laundry is produced for each bed change.

The higher the specification of the hotel with regards to the size and quantity of towels and bath sheets duvets etc. the more important it is to work it out using the laundry list and fabric weights.

This allows for two sheets two pillowcases, a bath towel, bath mat, hand towel, plus a portion of the table cloth. How-to-start-a-Laundry By using the table at the end of this page, your figures can be checked to see if there are any gross anomalies, where possible try to supply the weights and quantities per week/hour to be processed.

Beware of wild cards such as swimming pools, sauna, banqueting cloths and outside catering. When you have added up the total, check you can then ascertain the number of machines you will require using the drum volume calculation as explained in........ Laundry Calculations and the easy way to do them Where you learn how to work out how many machines are required for any given task.

This page will help you with deciding the size and number of machines to complete the amount of laundry load per day or week.

Rotary Iron or Callender

How-to-start-a-Laundry, shows you how to do it or if you have any queries contact me using the contacts form on the link below.

The size of Rotary Iron that is installed, depends on the amount of flat work to be finished, and the type of material used, cotton, and linen required to be finished on a rotary iron, polycotton should not have to ironed, if the wash and dry process was correct.

To work out the size of iron. Firstly add the length of the materials to be ironed together, to give a total length in metres.

This will also provide the total weight of the flat work.

Then from the iron technical information work out the size of iron required, because these figures show the maximum capability of the through-put it is best to provide twice the capacity.

This is to allow for the gap between one flat piece and the next.

If the total length of flat work was say 500 metres at a weight of 250kg then the iron should be capable of doing 1000 metres at 500kg in the time you have allowed for the work to be completed.

If the calculation looks difficult contact me using the form on the contact page and we will do the sums for you

Installation Guidelines for Laundry Machines

How-to-start-a-Laundry. Check Access!

Check power supplies and make note for when order is placed that the correct version is supplied i.e.; either 3 phase and neutral 380/415V or 220/240V single phase with separate isolator switch. Commercial washing machines within the UK are not permitted by the local water authorities to be connected directly to the rising main, and must be supplied from a dedicated supply, with a class A air gap. Guidance from the Water Company should be sought, should, there be any doubt.

If there is a choice of drainage on the range of machines you have set your mind on using, either pump drain via stand pipes, or gravity drain via a dump valve.

Pump drain is easier to install but this system is not normally used commercially. Most large commercial lauindry machines & sluice/disinfection control washer extractors from 8/30Kg will normally be supplied with gravity drain only.

An adequate fall from the drain outlet at the rear of the machine should be provided, about 300mm by means of a fabricated, or bought in plinth, see brochures and installation drawings for more detail. Any questions use the contact form on the contact page.

Tumble dryer installation

Venting of tumble dryers should be calculated to provide both fresh air into the laundry room, as make up air, in addition to the vent - out pipes which takes the hot damp air out.

The vent pipe should be constructed to provide a free flow of air without obstruction, with the size of pipe diameter taking into consideration the length and number of bends in the pipe.

The calculation for this is shown in the installation drawing, and instructions, supplied with most tumble dryers, should there be any doubt, use the contact form on the contact page we will check and confirm your calculations.

How-to-start-a-Laundry, Always try to arrange machines to provide a flow of work in the Laundry Room.

How-to-start-a-Laundry. A laundry room should be planned to provide a flow of dirty linen, from a receiving area, where it is sorted, into the washers, thence to the dryers, ironed, folded and stored. with no cross contamination of clean with dirty linen.

Washers, and dryers, can be increased to cope with extra work, but the right Iron must be chosen from the outset, as only one iron can be used at a time, without a waste of labour, or you end up with a second hand iron.
