How-to-do-Laundry-Mops and Mop Head Washing and Disinfecting

How-to-do-Laundry-Mops, The main issues of dealing with mop head cleaning and disinfection control,

Google

Mop head cleaning in Hospitals and Care applications. The insider secrets to help you save time and money with your cleaning processes.

What Level of disinfection is required?

How-to-do-Laundry-Mops The degree of cleaning should be established for each particular area of the site by the Hospital Trust Infection Control Team.

What that level is to be attained, and what criteria is to be used as the bench-mark and methodology for the audit of the cleanliness to be acheived.

This will include all areas of the building both inside and out within the environs. Which will also include waste bin areas, clinical waste holding areas, kitchen waste bin areas, as well as the clinical parts where a higher level of audit and control is required.

Dependent on which parts are defined as critical or general zones a cleaning regime is then planned, after working out what contaminants are acceptable and a recognisance of what levels presently exist. Dry Cleaning, such as vacuums, are fine for moving particles greater than 100µm but for smaller particles such as 10µm, they are only 10% efficient.

Using cloths or dry wipers generally simply moves the particles on, causing them to become airborne or even provide static charges. This may be ok in public areas but not at ward level or in the theatres or clinical areas.

Mops generally can be a very effective method when used wet, as this attracts particles to them and is therefore considerably more efficient at removing any contaminants from surfaces.

Using non-ionic detergent dilution is especially effective as this additionally reduces the surface tension, which binds particles to the floor surfaces

Which type of mop is in use, and how easy is it to wash and dry?

How-to-do-Laundry-Mops

Mops with polyurethane heads tend to crumble and deteriorate during use, which is obviously not acceptable, though there are now various types on the market which are knitted laminate structures which are better.

Vileda Mops, for example, are particularly good and are also highly absorbent.

Mops with continuous loops as opposed to cut lengths are less liable to break up in the washing machine and cause a blockage in the drain. This is very important for the maintenance and care of your washing machine and drains, both of which could become blocked by a rats nest of stringy bits broken off the mop heads.

However, it is a pointless exercise starting on Monday with a mop regime and still having the same mop being used on Friday. Traces of each area ‘cleaned’ will be carried right round the Hospital. How-to-do-Laundry-Mops Without proper cleaning of the mop itself, and the water being changed between areas, or strict control of the Disinfecting agent or Detergent used, the mop, instead of being the cleansing process to prevent infection spread, becomes instead, the likely cause the spread of infection.

You may use Chloride Bleaches in the penultimate rinses of the wash program, or they can be soaked in bleach for a few hours prior to being placed in the washing machine.

When using chloride bleach in the washing machine there are two ways to introduce it into the machine. This may be automatic dosing by pump or by manually adding the bleach to the soap hopper in the correct compartment. This compartment is marked with a bleach sign to avoid mixing with other agents. If using a fabric softener this goes in the final rinse which also has a marked hopper.

It is therefore sensible to ensure that the mops/heads themselves are properly Disinfected as a separate process in itself. One effective method of How-to-do-Laundry-Mops is the use of a suitable Washing Machine, to pre-wash, wash and multi-rinse. These programs can be the standard sluice program see my ... Sluice laundry program page

The Washer can provide an efficient Thermal-Disinfecting process to recommended levels of Disinfection, automatically, and audited if necessary each and every time and without the use of strong chemicals.

Drying can also be achieved using a suitable Tumble Dryer, then the mops can be further stored in a Drying cabinet/room to fully dry out. (the shorter drying time reduces moisture pick up of possible air contaminants).

Temperatures How-to-do-Laundry-Mops

The question of which temperatures are suitable within the UK for use in MOP washing is however debatable and is dependent on the requirements for each Health Trust.

The HSG(95)18 the NHS (UK) recommended Sluice/Disinfection Guideline for foul linen cleaning, for example, will also provide a very suitable standard for mop cleaning.

Alternatively, standard machine programmes with temperatures up to 90ºC are also highly effective, provided the laundry regime properly manages programme selection.

Some hospitals use Autoclaves for mop head cleaning and whilst this provides a method of killing micro-organisms and especially bacterial spores, in many cases the mops still have residues of soiling which are not cleaned off the mop strands.

These residue soils obviously affects the efficiency of the mop and reduces it’s absorbency.

In the majority of hospital floor areas, Thermal-Disinfection can provide not only highly effective cleaning of the mop, but also will remove the majority of pathogens - and to an acceptable level.

In those areas of high risk/infection classification, then autoclaving may still be a requirement. How-to-do-Laundry-Mops

Drainage – Avoid the knotty blockages when the mops break up

How-to-do-Laundry-Mops,

The washing of MOPs can cause machine problems owing to the various MOP constructions available. See above ref the continuous loop construction of the mop fibres.

It is therefore VERY important that any Washing Machine has a Dump or Gravity Drain, the larger the better, as the standard Drain Pump type will inevitably clog up with MOP fibres during use.

Even then if mops are continued to be washed after they are beyond their working life long fibres could become stuck within the valve.

This causes the machine to continually drain a small amount of the water from within the drum, and will show up as a faulty program.

There are many manufacturers, which can provide a range of Laundry equipment suitable for the process cleaning of Mops to Disinfection standards and they are continually developing new programmes and features to ensure optimum cleaning.
