Hardwater, the lime scale solutions page for laundry and dishwashing machines.

Hardwater page for all the solutions to your limescale problems.

Google

Hardwater, and the Limescale build-up within washing machines for both laundry and dishwashing is a major problem, there are several ways to tackle limescale build-up.

Hard water, and lime scale build-up within your washing machine and water heating equipment is a major problem for people who draw their water from a source within a limestone strata of rock.

This has affected my water supply here in Hereford for many years and I personally use a magnetic device to ionise the atoms of Calcium Carbonate, which stops it from adhering to, and building up in the pipes and boiler.

But not in the dishwasher, which has an ion exchange water softener built-in; which doses with salt during each cycle to regenerate the beads within the cartridge to remove the chloride and provide soft water for the wash process. This is as well as the magnetic ionising device.

I have used to have a large central water sofetening device to deal with all the water to the house, twenty years ago.

BUT.

It has been found to be healthier to drink hard water fresh from the ground which has calcium in solution, instead of the water that has been softened, which will then contain sodium chloride or common salt, and we all know that we are supposed to reduce our salt intake.

Also they are very expensive to run with all the salt bags etc.

The kitchen kettle still has a bit of build up of white Calcium but it is very soft and can be washed out easily every couple of weeks.

SO, I have found that the Ecoflow(Reg) magnetic water conditioners work well for me and my equipment.

Prior to having them fitted I had to have the Boiler with its heater element replaced as it filled with lime scale and was blowing the elements regularly.

This has not occurred since using the magnetic devices on the water pipes I am pleased to say.

The way they work, apparently is by aligning the atoms of soluble calcium by means of the magnetic field, which stops the normally random atoms attaching themselves to the metal parts of the machines, pipes and boilers.

This can save a lot of money in heating costs, blockages, and damage to pumps etc.

Hardwater in dishwashers and the solution to the problem.

Most domestic and small commercial dishwashers, which come with a built in water softener will have a brine tank which has to topped up regularly with salt crystals on a regular basis.

Normally the more you wash the more salt will be needed, there are various arrangements for warning of low salt in the brine tank.

Mainly with the use of a float which measures the specific gravity of the brine by sinking when the salt is low, which crates a visual warning or can be be made to trigger an electronic alarm.

Hardwater, Softeners How do they work?

When the machine is built with an integral water softener a small cartridge of plastic beads will be put in line with the Hard-water inlet, so that all the hard water going into the machine will pass through this Ion Exchange cartridge, where it will remove the soluble Calcium carbonate in the water and replace it with sodium chloride, common salt.

After a certain amount of use the cartridge is completely saturated with Calcium, which it has removed from the incoming water.

It will now require regenerating, which is where the brine tank comes in to play. The machine sends a squirt of brine through the cartridge exchanging the calcium solution for the salt.

And away you go again with the wash process.

Some machines send a small blast of brine with each wash so that the water softener is always at its most efficient for each wash programme.
